Two months after their elopement, Heathcliff and Isabella return to Wuthering Heights, where Heathcliff discovers that Catherine is dying. He returns with a wife, Frances, and immediately seeks revenge on Heathcliff.
Earnshaw, who lived with his son Hindley and younger daughter Catherine.
He cries out in fear, rousing Heathcliff, who rushes into the room. She returns to the Grange to see her father shortly before he dies.
He and Catherine grow close and their love is the central theme of the first volume. Ending chapters 32 to 34 [ edit ] Eight months later, Lockwood returns to the area by chance. Two more years pass, and Catherine and Edgar Linton become friends, while she becomes more distant from Heathcliff.
Nelly and Edgar begin to pander to her every whim to prevent her from becoming ill again.
Heathcliff keeps them captive to enable the marriage of Cathy and Linton to take place. On a trip to LiverpoolEarnshaw encounters a homeless boy, described as a "dark-skinned gypsy in aspect". Heathcliff overhears her say that it would "degrade" her to marry him but not how much she loves himand he runs away and disappears without a trace.
Hindley descends into drunkenness. Long before I was old enough to read it, I watched the Monty Python sketch in which Catherine and Heathcliff exchange passionate declarations of adulterous love across the moor tops using semaphore. When Frances dies after giving birth to a baby boy named Hareton, Hindley descends into the depths of alcoholism, and behaves even more cruelly and abusively toward Heathcliff.
Catherine confesses to Nelly that Edgar has proposed marriage and she has accepted, although her love for Edgar is not comparable to her love for Heathcliff, whom she cannot marry because of his low social status and lack of education. Heathcliff now controls both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange.
Young Catherine grows up at the Grange with no knowledge of Wuthering Heights; one day, however, wandering through the moors, she discovers the manor, meets Hareton, and plays together with him. Since Nelly is a few years older than Catherine, and since Lockwood comments that Heathcliff is about forty years old init stands to reason that Heathcliff and Catherine were born aroundthree years after Nelly.
